Yalan Shu
Piano Faculty
Pianist Yalan Shu, a versatile and expressive performer, has appeared in solo and chamber recitals throughout the United States and China. Her performances encompass a wide range of repertoire—from the elegance of the Baroque to the lyricism and complexity of modern music—reflecting her curiosity for diverse musical languages. She has collaborated with the UConn Wind Ensemble at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts and participated in master classes with renowned pianists, including Ieva Jokubaviciute, Angela Cheng, and Anthony de Mare.
Before her doctoral studies, Shu taught piano at New York University, North Minzu University, and in private studios in Beijing. Many of her students have achieved Distinction results in ABRSM examinations. As an educator, she believes in nurturing each student’s individuality and imagination, fostering both artistic growth and confidence on stage.
Shu holds degrees from New York University (M.M. in Piano Performance) and Minzu University of China (B.A. in Piano Education), as well as performance certificates from Sejong University and the University of Connecticut, where she studied with Marilyn Nonken, Yoojung Kim, Moonhee Hwang, and Angelina Gadeliya. She is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at Rutgers University, under the tutelage of Vladimir Valjarevic.
